Pain Science in Practice

Integrating pain education into the MSK appointment

Patient advocates describing what helps. Interviews with people living well with chronic pain. Trials of Cognitive Functional Therapy. Decades of research on graded exposure. Four lines of work, one destination. This course is built on that convergence.

Pain Science in Practice adds the piece that decides whether a plan goes anywhere: pain education that helps a person make sense of their pain, build tolerance for load, and keep showing up.

Four modules follow MSK care: understand the pain, assess beyond a diagnosis, act on a plan you agree together, then pull it together in a return-visit case consult.

What you'll be able to do:

  • Recognize nociceptive, neuropathic and nociplastic features, and why the label shapes your questions, not the dose
  • Spot fear avoidance and pushing through before they derail a plan
  • Judge irritability from a real episode, not a pain score
  • Explain findings and uncertainty without reinforcing fragility
  • Match graded activity, exposure or pacing to the person's main problem
  • Use the 24-hour check to repeat, adjust or reassess

You'll learn through short lessons, case decisions with feedback, and a practice lab with a fictional patient. You also get a chairside toolkit, a 24-hour monitoring handout and a before-and-after self-assessment.

For physiotherapists, kinesiologists, RMTs, chiropractors, OTs and mental health providers. Self-paced, case-based, about four hours.

Sean Overin is a physiotherapist and one of the co-founders of Tall Tree Health Vancouver, a multidisciplinary clinic group with locations across Victoria, Vancouver and Port Coquitlam. He also founded AMP Healthcare Education, a continuing-education platform built by clinicians who got tired of CE courses that felt disconnected from what actually happens with a patient in the room, and decided to build something better.

Sean treats musculoskeletal and persistent pain patients directly, alongside his physiotherapy practice, and separately runs the men's pelvic health program at Penticton Chiropractic and Co. Inside Tall Tree he leads the Chronic Pain Program, Learning and Development and Partnerships, work that puts him in the middle of how clinicians actually learn and where continuing education tends to fall short of changing what happens in the room.

Pain Science in Practice comes out of that combination: years spent watching good treatment stall because the pain education underneath it was missing, and years spent building the kind of clinical education he wished existed earlier in his own career.

Based in British Columbia, Sean works from the same principle AMP is built on: simplify the language, not the thinking.
